Self-initiated, the ‘Visions For Our Sustainable Future’ project involved the partnering of well-known Fremantle Sustainability Practitioners with local Fremantle Artists. The Sustainability Practitioners were asked to envisage their vision for our sustainable future and the Artists to express this visually through the medium of art.
Sustainability Practitioners included City of Fremantle Mayor Dr Brad Pettitt, Green’s Senator Scott Ludlam, ABC’s Gardening Australia Presenter Dr Josh Byrne and Professor Peter Newman from Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute. Artists included Ian de Souza, Susannah Castledon and Twenty Eleven.
The sustainability visions were diverse in nature, incorporating many inspiring ideas and initiatives, related to people, plants, animals, infrastructure, buildings, events and activities in a future Fremantle. Some of the visions were poetic, some descriptive, some humorous and many visions shared many similarities. The final artworks were of a diverse nature including prints, paintings, stencil art, illustrative drawing, watercolour and one in-situ sculpture.
The final sustainability visions and creative works were displayed in a 6-week exhibition at the gallery of renowned Fremantle icon, Little Creatures, which was accompanied by a full catalogue.
